Risk to reward calculator
A ratio on its own says nothing. What it says about the win rate you need is the useful part.
Read as a buy. Works for any instrument, because only the distances matter. Spread and costs are not included, and they make the real break-even win rate a little higher.
Free, and nothing is stored. Check every figure against your own platform before you trade on it. Nothing here is advice, and trading carries risk.
Risk is the distance from your entry to your stop. Reward is the distance from your entry to your target. The ratio is reward divided by risk, so a stop 10 away and a target 25 away is 1 : 2.5.
The number most people never work out is what that ratio demands. The win rate needed to break even is 1 ÷ (1 + the ratio). At 1 : 1 you need to win half your trades. At 1 : 2, a third. At 1 : 3, a quarter.
That is before costs. The spread is paid on every trade, winners and losers, so the real break-even win rate is a little higher than the figure shown, and noticeably higher on short-term trades where the spread is large relative to the stop.
A higher ratio is not automatically better. Targets further away are reached less often, so the win rate falls as the ratio rises. The ratio and the win rate only mean something together.
The ones people actually ask.
